Why choose psychotherapy?

Very often, we decide to start psychotherapy because we want a way or means to look at why it feels like something is missing in our life or our relationships or why relationships seem so difficult/impossible or cause us so much pain?

For others of us when we first decide to make an appointment for psychotherapy it is because we are suffering emotional pain, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, or fear. In addition, some of us are eager to explore why we seem to keep “getting stuck” in habits that aren’t helpful or satisfying or which can even be harmful/destructive.

As a therapist, I am particularly interested in supporting clients to explore who they are in relationship… whether with friends, partners, parents, siblings,  children or in work or social situations. Core to this therapeutic exploration is finding out how is it we relate to ourselves; How do we view ourselves? How supportive or not are our internal voices?  How do we take care of ourselves /or not?

There have been many studies done on “what works in therapy” and the key finding is that no matter what method is used the underpinning factor for success is the establishment of a good working relationship between therapist and client.

With a good therapeutic alliance between therapist and client embedded in a confidential and supportive space then; firstly we can get curious about who we are now and start to make sense of our lives and Secondly begin to explore other options for how we might live our lives which might give us more fulfilment /contentment or ease.

As a therapist I work Integratively; combining many methods according to the clients needs. I place particular emphasis on the blending of insights from neuroscience/mind-body connection and attachment theory with the therapeutic use of compassionate mindfulness. However, essentially I believe that the power of psychotherapy lies in being both attuned and responsive to the process happening in the moment an between client and therapist.
